HISTORY OF COLLEGE CLUB WEST

Lakewood College Club was organized in 1926 to provide opportunities for college-educated women to explore and promote their cultural and educational interests.  Jean Dawson was elected the first president and fifteen members were named to serve as the Board of Trustees. At the end of the first year, membership had risen to 204.  The budget was $585.00, with three interest groups: Drama, French, and Psychology.

The club was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1955.  Over time, the area from which club members were drawn expanded, so in 1980, the name was changed to College Club West (CCW) as a reflection of this change.  Today, two hundred-plus CCW members share an interest in learning about their community and the larger world. Over 30 interest groups meet monthly in members’ homes or other locations.  The club also holds general meetings for all members and sponsors special events with speakers who are experts on a variety of topics. Membership is open to women who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited degree-granting college or who are registered nurses. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, all meetings are open to the public. We encourage regular attendees who have a four-year degree to become a member.
